Double Reed Repair

Oboe Assembly Tips

  1. Attach the bell to the bottom joint. If you have a low Bb key, hold it closed while assembling the joints.
  2. Line up the posts so that the bridge keys will close the Bb.
  3. Assemble the upper and lower joints, holding the top of the upper joint and the bottom of the lower joint. Align the main key posts rather than the bridge keys.
  4. To assemble cork joints, gently twist the two parts until they come together.
  5. Hold the upper joint, avoiding any keys, and insert the reed all the way.

Bassoon Assembly Tips

  1. Be sure to grab the bassoon by solid wood parts only as fragile keys and rods can bend, bind, or break.
  2. Line the wing joint up and place the cork end into the smaller hole in the boot joint.
  3. Line the long joint up and place the cork end into the boot joint. Be careful when fitting it into the wing joint as not to bend or bind keys.
  4. When putting the bell on be sure to press the key down so the rods don't bend or bind.
  5. The bocal can easily bend or get damaged. Be sure to grab the bocal by the curve closest to the cork end. Place the cork of the bocal into the receiver.

Double Reed Care and Maintenance Tips

  1. After playing, move a swab through each joint to remove all moisture. Tenons collect moisture, especially at the upper and lower joints, so moisture should be removed with gauze.
  2. When drying a pad, insert cleaning paper between it and the tone hole and lightly press down. Then, carefully pull paper away.
  3. Use a tone hole cleaner to remove build-up of residue in the tone holes.
  4. Wipe the body down using a dry cloth. Avoid using liquids or aerosols as the moisture can harm pads.
